Word-for-word templates that get responses
Networking in tech is not about attending events and collecting business cards. It is targeted outreach to specific people with a specific ask. Here are the exact scripts that get responses.
The one principle that makes networking work
The key insight
Most networking fails because people ask for too much too soon. “Can you refer me for a job?” as a first message almost never works. The ask that works: “Can I get 20 minutes of your time to ask you about your experience?” This is low-friction, flattering, and leads to the relationship that eventually produces referrals and introductions.
The cold LinkedIn message that gets responses
Use this when reaching out to someone you have never spoken to.
Template — Cold outreach
Hi [Name] — I came across your profile while researching [company/role]. I am currently transitioning from [background] into [target role], and your path caught my attention because [specific reason — you made a similar transition / you work on something I am interested in / you wrote something I found useful]. Would you be open to a 20-minute call? I have specific questions about [topic] and would genuinely value your perspective.
Why this works
- It is specific — you know something about them
- It is low-ask — 20 minutes, not a referral
- It signals you have done homework
- It offers a clear agenda
The follow-up message after no response
Wait 10 days. Then send this.
Template — Follow-up (10 days later)
Hi [Name] — I sent a message last week and wanted to follow up. I know your time is limited, so if a call is not the right format, I would also be happy to send my questions over email if that is easier. Either way, I appreciate your time.
The warm introduction request
When asking a mutual contact to introduce you to someone at a target company.
Template — Warm intro request
I noticed you are connected to [Name] at [Company]. I am exploring [role] opportunities there and would love a warm introduction if you think it would be appropriate. Happy to send you a short blurb to forward — I do not want to put you in an awkward position.
The post-informational interview thank you
Send within 24 hours of the call. This is what turns a one-time conversation into a lasting relationship.
Template — Thank you (within 24 hours)
Thank you for the call today. [Specific thing they said that was useful]. I will follow up on [thing they suggested]. If there is ever anything I can do to return the favor — [specific offer relevant to their work] — please let me know.
The referral ask
Only send this after 1–2 real conversations. Asking too early kills the relationship.
Template — Referral request (after relationship is established)
I am actively applying for [role] at [Company]. You have been so helpful — would you be comfortable submitting a referral for me? I will make it easy — I can send you my resume and a brief note on why I am a good fit. No pressure at all if it feels premature.
