Networking scripts

Copy-paste templates that actually work

Most people hate networking because they do not know what to say. Here are 8 ready-to-use scripts for LinkedIn messages, cold emails, and informational interview requests.

The networking principle

The goal is not to ask for a job. The goal is to have a genuine conversation that might lead to one. Be specific, be brief, and make it easy for them to say yes.

LinkedIn connection requests

Template 1 — Career changer to someone in target role

Hi [Name], I am making a career change into [role] and found your profile while researching people in the field. I would love to connect and potentially ask you a few questions about your experience. No pressure at all — just hoping to learn from someone already doing the work I am aiming for.

Template 2 — Alumni connection

Hi [Name], I noticed we both went to [University]. I am currently transitioning into [role] in tech and would love to connect with fellow alumni doing interesting work. Happy to connect and share notes on the journey.

Informational interview requests

Template 3 — Direct request

Hi [Name], I am transitioning into [role] and I have been following your work at [Company] — particularly [specific thing]. I would love 20 minutes of your time to hear about your experience and what you wish you had known earlier in your career. I am happy to work around your schedule.

Template 4 — After connecting

Thank you for connecting! I am genuinely interested in making the transition into [role], and your background is really inspiring. Would you be open to a brief 20-minute call over the next few weeks? I have a few specific questions and would value your perspective enormously.

Cold email to hiring manager

Template 5 — For a job you applied to

Subject: [Role] Application — [Your Name]

Hi [Name], I applied for the [Role] position at [Company] last week. I wanted to reach out directly because I am genuinely excited about this opportunity — [specific reason related to their product or mission]. I have [specific qualification] and believe I could contribute significantly to [specific team goal]. Happy to share more context if helpful. Thank you for your time.

After the informational interview

Template 6 — Thank you note

Hi [Name], thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me today. Your insight about [specific thing they said] was particularly valuable — I had not considered [specific implication]. I will be applying your advice about [specific advice] as I take my next steps. I genuinely appreciate your generosity with your time.

Asking for a referral

Template 7 — After building a relationship

Hi [Name], I saw that [Company] is hiring for [Role] and I am very interested in applying. You mentioned you know people there — would you be comfortable referring me or introducing me to the hiring manager? I am happy to send you my resume and a note explaining why I am a strong fit so you can forward it with confidence.

Following up after silence

Template 8 — One week after no response

Hi [Name], I wanted to follow up on my message from last week. I completely understand if you are busy — if now is not a good time, I am happy to check back in a month. If you do have 20 minutes, I would really appreciate it. Thank you.
